What Is the Difference Between the Strip-Cut and Cross-Cut Models?

Strip-cut and cross-cut describe the shape of the particle produced, which determines the security level and how difficult it is to reconstruct shredded documents. Every i-suffix model is strip-cut at P-2. Every Ci-suffix model is cross-cut at P-4.

 

Strip-cut (i models: 225i, 325i, 425i, 485i):

  1. Cuts paper into long vertical strips, typically 5.8mm wide.
  2. Security level P-2, the lowest DIN level in this range.
  3. Higher sheet throughput per pass than the cross-cut equivalent.
  4. Suitable for general waste and non-sensitive documents.
  5. Not recommended where POPIA compliance requires higher-grade destruction.

 

Cross-cut (Ci models: 225Ci, 325Ci, 425Ci, 485Ci):

  1. Cuts paper into small rectangular particles (4x30mm to 4x38mm depending on model).
  2. Security level P-4, substantially more secure than strip-cut.
  3. Produces more particles per sheet, harder to reconstruct.
  4. Suitable for confidential documents, staff records, client files, and general POPIA compliance.
  5. Recommended as the minimum standard for most South African business environments.

 

Under POPIA, businesses must destroy personal information so it cannot be reconstructed or identified. Strip-cut at P-2 leaves long readable strips that carry a higher reconstruction risk. Cross-cut at P-4 is the more defensible choice for regulated environments, and P-4 is the standard most compliance advisors recommend as a minimum.
