What Is the Difference Between the Classic Numbered Series and the LX Series?

The classic numbered series (21Cs through 125i) and the LX series represent two different product generations with different design priorities, bin types, safety mechanisms, and use cases. Understanding these differences helps narrow the choice quickly.

 

Classic numbered series (21Cs, 12C, 70S, 73Ci, 75Cs, 79Ci, 90S, 99Ci, 125Ci, 125i):

  1. Pull-out bin on most models (not lift-off head), which holds more volume.
  2. SafeSense on most models — stops shredding when hands touch the paper entry.
  3. Some models include SilentShred and Energy Savings System.
  4. 230mm throat width standard across the range.
  5. Designed for moderate to heavy home office or small shared office use.
  6. Warranty: 2-year machine / 5-year cutter on most; 125Ci and 125i carry a 20-year cutter warranty.

 

LX series (LX25M, LX41, LX45, LX50, LX70, LX85, LX210, LX220) and M8C:

  1. Smaller footprint, generally lighter – suited to desk or home use.
  2. Most models use a lift-off head rather than a pull-out bin, which limits bin capacity.
  3. Patented Safety Lock on most LX models – disables the shredder entirely rather than simply stopping the motor on contact.
  4. LX85 is the exception – it uses SafeSense rather than Safety Lock and has a pull-out bin like the numbered series.
  5. LX210 and LX220 introduce IntelliBAR, a sheet-load efficiency meter, and sleep mode energy saving.
  6. LX50 and LX70 are white in colour, suitable for aesthetic-sensitive home environments.

Strip-cut vs cross-cut vs mini-cut reminder:

  1. Strip-cut (70S, 90S, 125i): P-2, lowest security, highest throughput, suitable for non-sensitive documents.
  2. Cross-cut (most models): P-3 (M8C, 21Cs –  larger particles) or P-4 (all others -4x37mm to 4x52mm).
  3. Mini-cut (LX25M, LX41, LX210, LX220): P-4 at 4x12mm – over 1000 particles per A4 sheet, significantly harder to reconstruct than standard cross-cut.

 

Under POPIA, standard cross-cut at P-4 or above is generally accepted as a defensible minimum for confidential business documents. Mini-cut at P-4 offers additional assurance for sensitive personal information. Strip-cut at P-2 is not recommended for documents containing personal information subject to POPIA.
